Step 1 of 6
I've made a different pair for the how to pictures. Have fun!

Step 2 of 6
Making the mittens is very easy. I will keep the instructions as simple as I can. Just comment if anything is unclear.
You need:
A) 2 pieces of fabric, 26x8 inches
plus batting of the same size (I used 2 layers of 1/4" thick batting for every fabric piece)
B) 2 pieces of fabric, 8x8 inches
C) Cotton thread (heat resistant!)
If you already have quilted fabric at hand (COTTON, LINEN or any heat-resistant natural fabric), you can use this instead and skip the quilting step.
-
Step 3 of 6
(skip this step if you use quilted fabric)
Pin each fabric piece (A) onto its batting layer. Mark parallel, diagonal lines and sew fabric and batting together. Repeat for second piece.
If your fabric is large enough you could also cut ONE piece 26x16 and cut it in half after quilting.
Instead of the classical diamond pattern you can also go wild and quilt any shape you can think of.
Any embroidery is best done now.
-
Step 4 of 6
Hem one edge of each (B) piece. Therefor fold edge 1/2" twice, stitch. You can also use decorative stitches, if you like.
-
Step 5 of 6
Mitten-Sandwich: First, Piece (A), right side up, then the two (B) pieces at the left and right end, right side up, hems pointing towards each other, nothing extending piece (A), and then the remaining piece (A), right side DOWN. Pin together. You may clip away ca. 1,5" at an 45 degree angle at the corners (easier to turn it inside out later!). You may also cut them round. If you like, add a loop.
-
Step 6 of 6
Sew together with 1/2" seam allowance. Keep around 4-6" open for turning. Turn, press, sew the opening shut, et violá :) Ready for the kitchen!
Materials
cotton/linen fabric scraps (at least 2 pieces 26x8 inches each and 2 pieces 8x8 inches each), batting

Cool! I am constantly having to find the other mitt my kids misplace when they cook. I have got to make some of these.
Oh cool! I've been wanting some new pot holders. These are neat looking and the fact that there's only one is even better. Thanks for the tutorial.
